They say that love comes in a million ways, but when it comes you should embrace it with open arms.
I like to share my story because my story is about how some people go the extra mile out of love for others.
It happened this way: I had just graduated and gained admission to Law School, so I had to celebrate.
I sneaked out of home in my dad’s Toyota Camry car and went to a bar
in a hotel not too far away from home to take some alcohol and generally
have a good time.
My best friend promised to meet me at the bar, but unfortunately,
after I’d waited at the bar for her for about thirty minutes, she called
to say that she could no longer make it.
I didn’t want her absence to ruin my celebration, so I decided to
still take some drinks and go home later. I think I had had too much to
drink later when I found that I was totally tipsy and could hardly get
up from my chair.
I was feeling very dizzy. It was just as though my head was spinning,
but I struggled to my feet and grabbed my car keys which I had
carelessly left on the table.
I had begun to stagger out the door and towards my car in the car
park when suddenly one man wearing native appeared from nowhere and took
my car keys out of my hand.
I asked him if he was the latest armed robber in town or Anini’s
younger brother. And I told him that the petrol in my car wasn’t enough
to take him to Cotonou if he intended to run away with my car to Benin
Republic.
But the man just laughed and said his name is Joseph. He asked me why
I wanted to drive when I knew that I was drunk. And I said it’s because
my driver traveled to London.
Joseph refused to release my car keys back to me and offered to drive me home himself.
After all attempts to make him return my car keys failed, I described the wrong way home to him in my drunken state.
So Joseph drove me home in my own car after calling my mum with my
handset and getting the proper directions to my house from her.
The following morning after I had woken up with a hangover, I thought
Joseph seized my car keys because he was an officer with the Federal
Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and I was scared that he was coming back
to arrest me for attempting to drive after getting drunk.
But I was surprised when Joseph came and said that he was self-employed and didn’t work for government.
He simply said that he did what he did out of love for me and because he didn’t want me to waste my life. I was really touched.
From that day on, we were best of friends. My parents totally welcomed him into our family and thanked him for saving my life.
My mother even joked that since he is ever so thoughtful, I should
have him by my side everywhere I go. So for that reason, my younger
sister started using MTN’s favorite line to address me and Joseph.
Whenever she saw us together or if she saw me getting ready to go out on a date with him, she would say, “Everywhere you go…”
That was how she kept on teasing and reminding me with MTN’s line
(Everywhere you go) that it was good for me to always have Joseph by my
side forever and for always.
Therefore, when he proposed, I said yes with my eyes even before my lips moved.
I fell in love with Joseph after he seized my car keys and wouldn’t
let me drive myself home in my drunken state, because after having
reflected on the whole episode, I realized that I would have probably
had an accident and killed myself if I had driven my car in such a
state.
I realized that only a man who loved me could have done what he did. I appreciate the fact that he saved my life that day.
Prevention is better than cure. Only God knows what could have
happened to me that night if Joseph hadn’t been there as my guardian
angel.
I’m not ashamed that I met my husband in a bar, because you can find
love anywhere. I’m only ashamed that I got drunk, but God made it turn
out for my own good because Joseph went the extra mile out of love for
me by seizing my cars keys.
